Focus of the Role

With an exciting agenda in place, the Institute aims to strengthen its fundraising operation so that it can support its ongoing development, growth and expanding influence. We are looking to recruit a Maternity Cover for an Institutional Funding Manager role to join our small and dynamic team in London to support this effort and diversify our institutional donor funding base including a broad range of foundations and bilateral and multilateral institutional donors. As a member of the Institute, you will be joining an international staff community of c.200 people, based in 4 continents.

 

Job Introduction

As Institutional Funding Manager, you will directly impact the Institute’s fundraising efforts by identifying and securing bilateral and multilateral government and/or largescale foundation funding for the Institute. Working across the Institute, you will help position the organisation for contracts and grants directly with funders and indirectly through consortia or frameworks suppliers. You will work with the project heads, finance and head of institutional funding to research and analyse opportunities, monitor donor engagement plans and lead/support proposal development processes from opportunity to award.

This is a hands-on role with plenty of opportunity for personal growth. The role includes partnership management, and proposal writing and development. Ideally, we are looking for someone with experience of raising funds from bilateral and multilateral governments such as USAID, the EU and DFID and/or largescale foundations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The successful candidate will thrive in a start-up atmosphere and have a creative and entrepreneurial attitude, and proven experience of successfully securing large grants and contracts.

Key Responsibilities

1.       Business Development (20%)

·       Support the Head of Institutional Funding to monitor donor engagement plans;

·       Research and analyse potential grant and contract opportunities including with close coordination with Project teams;

·       Anticipate future trends and donor expectations, and help build an intelligence based fundraising approach for the Institute;

·       Help project teams develop relationships with local representatives of the donors in your portfolio, including briefings and field visits as necessary;

·       Help strengthen the Institute’s cases for support and other fundraising materials in a way that is tailored to specific largescale foundations and government donor audiences

2.       Proposal Development (60%)

·       Lead proposal development processes for largescale foundations and government donors;

·       Support cross-organisational teams to position the Institute for funding opportunities;

·       Collaborate with and travel to project countries when required to work directly with the Institute’s country teams to design effective proposals and to devise budgets;

·       Ensure all compliance issues are addressed including consulting and implementing go/no-go, consortium engagement, quality control on budgets, proposal logical models, theory of change and M&E;

·       Support contract development, negotiations, execution, corporate requirements on cost-recovery are met by liaising with relevant colleagues in Finance and Legal.

3.       Donor and Partner Relations (10%)

·       Support coordination of reporting with the relevant teams including finance and programme teams and ensuring compliance with grant/contract terms as well as maintain grant/contract management schedule.

4.       Other (10%)

·       Work with Fundraising and Finance teams to ensure a strong grants and contracts monitoring system in terms of projections and forecasting;

·       Ensure all program funding documentation is kept up to date and appropriately on the Institute’s CRM.

Person Specification

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of four years of institutional fundraising experience. Experience of commercial bids desirable;
  • A proven track record of successfully securing and managing large and complex grants from largescale foundations and government donors is essential. Experience of successfully fundraising from USAID, EU, DFID and/or other European government donors and/or largescale foundations desirable;
  • Knowledge of approaches to monitoring and evaluation and logical frameworks is desirable;
  • Prior experience working or studying in developing countries is desirable.

COMPENTENCIES AND SKILLS

  • Excellent proposal writing and proposal development skills;
  • Good researching and editing skills;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential (with French desirable);
  • Strong numeracy and analytical ability, with ability to understand and design complex budgets;
  • Good organizational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines under pressure and manage multiple tasks and competing priorities;
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new systems easily; proficiency in Microsoft Office;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, problem-solving attitude, and ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team player;
  • Strong IT skills and ability to learn new systems easily; proficiency in Microsoft Office and SharePoint desirable.
  • Bachelor’s Degree. Master’s Degree desirable.
