Focus of the Role

Generation Global is the Institute’s global citizenship education programme. It enables young people to embrace the future, equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become active, global and open-minded citizens. Generation Global was established in 2009 and has worked in over 30 countries in Asia, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Europe and the Americas, teaching dialogue skills to teachers and students, and facilitating meaningful global encounters between young people aged 13 to 17.

The programme has trained over 15,000 teachers and worked with over 570,000 students globally, through its online community and the Ultimate Dialogue Adventure (UDA). It has enabled over 3,800 classroom VCs and over 400 online encounters between students internationally. Our resources are recognised as good practice by organisations including UNESCO, the Brookings Institution and Club De Madrid, and have been used in the programme’s partnership with governments across the world, including Italy, Jordan, Australia’s Northern Territory and several states in India.

Job Introduction

Working closely with the Director of Generation Global, the Special Projects Lead will play an important role in two key areas:

  1. Leading Generation Global's thought leadership,
  2. Overseeing Generation Global's programme management and operations, in particular quality assurance operations and overall programme delivery e.g. contribution to and ensuring compliance with programme and safeguarding systems, processes and reporting and managing the video conference activities.

The successful candidate will also contribute to the growth, quality and impact of the programme as a member of the Generation Global Leadership team.

This role requires someone with proven success in project management and delivery,  a flair for working with colleagues within the team and cross organisationally and a passion for improving systems and processes.

Key Responsibilities

1. Thought Leadership management

  • Working with the Director of Generation Global, and with colleagues in the Extremism Policy Unit, project manage and successfully deliver the Youth Insights for a Shared Future Research Initiative.
  • In the process, ensure youth voice and agency is represented and is in alignment with Generation Global's Equity, Accessibility, Inclusivity and Sustainability approach.
  • Identify key external partners with which to collaborate and select relevant policy fora that will showcase the findings and has the potential to elicit policy makers support e.g. G20, CoP.
  • Together with EPU and Generation Global colleagues, explore means of measuring thought leadership impact.
  • With EPU colleagues, identify follow-on work for future youth focused research and policy initiatives for 2023 and beyond.

2. Programme Management and Operations

This specifically includes:

a. Quality Assurance operations and delivery

  • Support the Director of Generation Global in the development of annual business plans, processes and best practice guidelines related to the project cycle management.
  • Manage Generation Global's quality assurance commitments, set out in the business plan, working closely with colleagues to ensure timely and effective delivery of these targets.
  • Line manage the UK Coordinator, other team members and consultants (where applicable).
  • Communicate regularly with the Education and Quality Lead to monitor and revise Quality Assurance procedures and ensure criteria is met for high quality learning outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate and programme policies, systems and processes, including those related to safeguarding, security and legal matters.
  • Be accountable for managing user and beneficiary data, in alignment with TBI policies, ensuring correct permissions are in place and data is cleansed as appropriate.
  • Ensure funds are applied according to financial management and control policies, and within approved budgets to deliver on agreed priorities within agreed timeframes.
  • Contribute to the alignment of Generation Global with the TBI mission and strategic goals, providing information where needed.

b. Video conference management

  • In collaboration with the Partnerships, Marketing and Communication Lead, develop the annual videoconference schedule of activities and events.
  • Together with Generation Global colleagues, idenfity strategies to maximise video conference bookings that contribute to achieving annual targets.
  • Project manage video conference events e.g. SDG dialogue series.
  • Regularly oversee video conference activity, providing weekly reporting and analysis to the Director of Generation Global and Partnerships, Marketing and Communication Lead.
  • Line manage and provide support to the Coordinator and video conference technical team in the running of the video conference sessions and the Generation Global customer helpdesk.  
  • Work closely with the Education and Quality Lead, coordinate the activities of the lead and global facilitator teams, continuously exploring ways to enhance the dialogue video conference experience for young people. 

Leadership Team

  • As part of the Generation Global Leadership team, contribute to furthering the goals of TBI and Generation Global, and identify ways to contribute to the growth and impact of the programme.  
  • The position will also work closely with the Partnerships and Communications Lead and Business Development Manager to identify and expertly steward strategic partnerships that will secure the future growth and sustainability of Generation Global.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Generation Global and Partnerships and Communications Lead contribute to identifying and cultivating new global strategic partnerships to expand the reach and impact of the programme, in line with its business plan.
  • Undertake any other responsibilities that further contribute to the Generation Global’s business plans, as required.

Person Specification

  • Proven experience in managing and implementing multiple, ideally international development, project management processes and initiatives.
  • Internationally accredited training and/or qualification in Project Management/ Development Management.
  • Awareness of relevant policy contexts and experience of designing research methods, collecting data and using this to influence policy with evidence and practical recommendations.
  • Attention to detail and an eye for seeking out and applying continual quality improvements to systems, ways of working and approaches that promote equity, accessibility and incusion.
  • Experience of managing teams and coordinating processes to successfully deliver projects to time and budget.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning systems and processes.
  • Ability to collaborate within teams and across areas of expertise to design and implement projects to the highest quality.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to a high standard, and to network with a range of stakeholders in order to further the programme's initiatives.
  • Experience of contributing to successful project development and proposal/bid-writing for a range of donors.
  • Ability to take initiative and contribute towards creative problem solving and making difficult evidence-based decisions.
  • Passion for tackling complex social challenges, and dedication to affecting meaningful change.
  • Understanding and experience of undertaking financial management, including budgeting, monitoring and reporting, and ensuring compliance with corporate finance policies.
