Focus of the Role

The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) supports governments on strategy, policy and delivery through its advisory practice and policy work. As the Institute grows, we are seeking an Executive Director, Global Strategic Communications who will develop and implement a communications strategy to maximise the impact of our work across the entire organisation and oversee the team delivering it. With over 500 staff, in 30 countries, and growing rapidly, this is a rare opportunity to lead communications for a truly global, political, high impact organisation. Successfully implemented, this will tell a coherent story and showcase what we do in policy and advisory.

Job Introduction

The successful candidate will be accustomed to complex environments and able to operate strategically and at pace. With a keen interest in public policy, and ideally experience in government and political communications, they will believe in the power of progressive politics and know how to deploy strategic communications to realise a policy objective, understanding the importance of being in the debate – and knowing when to start them.

Reporting to the Institute’s CEO, the ED, Global Strategic Communications is a senior role, leading and managing the communications, press, social media and creative teams across all TBI offices. The role, whilst based in London, will be responsible for communicating the impact of TBI’s work globally. As a member of the leadership team the ED, Global Strategic Communications will work closely and collaboratively with other senior leaders in the Institute, helping raise the profile of our impact and our staff and experts.

Key Responsibilities

 
  • ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Be responsible for and lead all communications, media, press, social and creative activities on behalf of the Institute to ensure that the work of TBI is reaching, influencing and impacting the relevant audiences and stakeholders
  • Develop and lead a global communication, press and media strategy for the Institute, to advance the Institute’s key strategic priorities including the Future of Britain project, and help drive and communicate impact globally
  • Work closely with policy and advisory experts across the global network of TBI raising their profile and influence
  • Develop and deliver successful global initiatives with country-level input that will achieve both global and local deliverables
  • Develop and lead a global communication, press and media strategy for the Institute, to advance the Institute’s key strategic priorities including the Future of Britain project, and help drive and communicate impact globally
  • Establish a marketing plan to promote global advisory and manage/raise TBI profile, including a comms approach to showcase TBI partnerships and value proposition
  • Innovate and deliver programmes that advance and outline the aims of the Institute in a measurable way, through policy and communications
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the goals of the wider Institute, the critical success factors which underpin them and the challenges and opportunities that may impact them in the external communications environment
  • Work with leaders across the Institute’s Policy and Advisory divisions to translate and develop effective communications strategies that will raise the profile and impact of the work of the Institute, influence the debate and showcase the impact of our work on a global scale
  • Oversee editorial direction—writing, editing, and developing content—and the design, production, and distribution of the Institute’s promotional content across all communication channels and platforms
  • Develop the Institute’s brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms
  • Build upon outstanding brand recognition, work across channels to further increase awareness and understanding of the Institute, and its mission to stakeholders around the globe
  • Develop and manage key performance indicators and analytics to track effectiveness of communications strategy
  • Ensure high quality delivery of new and existing workstreams
  • Ensure the growth and development of a high-performing culture and provide a continued focus on learning, development and employee well-being
  • Oversee and be accountable for recruitment
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships across TBI and actively champion TBI’s progressive values
  • Provide direct advice and serve as strategic partner to the CEO, Executive Chairman, Board and wider leadership team

Person Specification

The Executive Director, Global Strategic Communications will be an experienced and successful leader:

  • With significant experience in leading strategic communications and press office teams for complex, global organisations. Working in an environment subject to media attention is an advantage
  • Who has led global policy communications team in developing and implementing communications strategies to support policy initiatives
  • With a personal passion for politics and government, bringing demonstrable expertise in public policy or administration, international relations or another similar field
  • Who is strategic, entrepreneurial, can challenge the status-quo and develop plans for successful delivery of challenging objectives
  • Who is a skilled communicator and influencer, from executive office level through to technical level, is adept at speaking to senior leadership, knows how to navigate ambiguous environments and is comfortable at managing up and beyond hierarchy
  • With demonstrable evidence of building high performing and engaged teams, nurturing talent, and creating an inclusive culture
  • With a strong ability to translate new or evolving strategies into effective communications
  • With excellent judgment and a proven ability to achieve results and make decisions in changing, complex environments
