Focus of the Role

Role Summary

The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) is a high-impact organisation that advises and supports political leaders worldwide on strategy, policy and delivery with technology as the key enabler for success. It does this through an incredible 600+ person team operating in over 30 countries worldwide. 

 

Alongside the Institute’s Advisory and Strategy and Partnerships divisions, the Policy and Politics division serves an important role for the Institute. Our policy and political professionals, based in London and around the globe, lead TBI’s original research and thinking on the most important questions for leaders.

The Policy and Politics division generates analysis that shapes public debate, enhances the work of client governments, and supports partnerships which improve people’s lives. Our work is global in nature, but we also develop individual national strategies, including our flagship Future of Britain programme.
 

Job Introduction

The Director of Economic Policy is a new role within the Policy and Politics division, leading a team covering, among other global issues, monetary and fiscal policy, industrial strategy, competition policy and housing. The team and the Director is expected to work closely with other policy teams on issues such as skills, environment, health etc to ensure the overall policy package we develop globally is both coherent and affordable. 

The work of this role will be crucial to our credibility and success and will help shape the Institute’s policy agenda. TBI should be seen as a trusted provider of politically-relevant economic thought leadership by Heads of Government, Opposition Leaders, Chancellors, Finance Ministers and their teams.

This role reports to the Executive Director, Policy.

Key Responsibilities

­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­The holder of this position will:

  • Lead a research programme to identify economic trends and policy challenges
  • Develop analysis of issues and policy responses, including specific recommendations for governments and policymakers
  • Oversee production of high-quality published work and private briefing material, either for specialist economists or a general political audience
  • Manage a team and a budget
  • Provide direct advice to senior leaders in TBI, and to external clients
  • Advocate for the Institute’s point of view in external meetings or conferences, or through the media
  • Provide support and economic oversight to other strands of policy work
  • Lead a stream of work within the Future of Britain programme, contribute to the overall policy strategy and play a part in its presentation and advocacy
  • Support Advisory and Partnerships colleagues to develop our reputation for economic policy around the world, through appearances at forums outside the UK and work on regional or national policy questions
  • Support senior leaders in the Institute in their external engagements on economic policy

Person Specification

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a strong academic basis in economics (at least Bachelors degree or equivalent)
  • Have a track record working in economic analysis within government, business, academia or a policy organisation
  • Be comfortable with public speaking and advocacy to a range of audiences.
  • Have an outstanding ability to communicate complex issues to a range of audiences
  • Have a track record of managing staff and leading a team

The following attributes are desirable:

  • Further study in Economics, to Masters (or equivalent) or beyond
  • Experience of working in a non-UK setting
  • Experience of working closely with political leaders
