Job Introduction

This role is critical to delivering TBI’s ambiton. The Director, Global New Business is responsible for global leadership and oversight of strategic business development and resource mobilisation to sustain and grow TBI’s operations and impact. Core areas to build upon are: global foundations, government and governmental agencies, client contracts. Emerging areas to conduct feasibility studies in and/or instigate include:  global/regional expansion (ME and Asia); multilateral organisations.

This person will build deep relationships with organisations who can partner with the Institute through resources to support governments across the world. They will hold accountability primarily for opportrunity generation and early stage pipeline development. They will partner closely with other leaders across the Institute to develop and shape propositons to take to a target portfolio. Critically, they will transform relationships within a target portfolio from transactional revenue sources into strategic partners.

The Director will be, alongside senior leaders in the organisation, the face and voice of the Institute to this target portfolio of partners. They will bring a strong network of senior level contacts present across global foundations, bilateral and multilateral agencies as well as governments, they will hold the stature and intellect to present the Institute in a compelling way.

This role is within the Global Business Development & Income Partnerships Division of TBI, part of the wider Strategy & Partnerships department (S&P). S&P is one of 3 external facing business critical departments, the other two being: Policy & Politics, and Global Government Advisory. The S&P department leads and oversee the Institute’s strategic direction and growth, with specific responsibility for futureproofing growth, developing scalable partnerships, innovating in tech and securing financial resources to measurably advance the Institute’s operational goals and drive sustainable impact. This is both a rewarding and positively challenging high-profile post in the organisation, with direct working relationship with other senior leaders. The role reports to the Executive Director, Business Development & Income Partnerships and has people and budgetary responsibility. As part of the wider team of Directors, this role will play a critical role in delivering the institute’s ambitions.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Develop vision and strategy to meet current and future revenue goals
  • Lead opportunity generation with particular focus on upstream engagements of the pipeline across set portfolio
  • Plan, coordinate and assure implementation of approaches to develop strategic income partnerships with target groups across governments and governmental agencies, global foundations, etc.
  • Build out personal and Institute pipeline to match our 5-year ambitions and lead growth strategy across set portfolio
  • Develop and cultivate network of senior level relationships across the target portfolio and ensure their continued engagement with the Institute’s agenda and our partner governments
  • Provide the intellectual leadership to inform Institute’s programs to ensure relevance to portfolio and develop strategies to shape income partner engagements with our governments including their approach to global development
  • Work with others across Global BD&I, Strategy & Partnerships, and the wider institute to assure development and maintenance of appropriate systems to support effective implementation.
  • Foster a culture of collaborative problem-solving, efficient, effective decision-making, and transparency
  • Ensure proper planning including goal-setting, strategy identification, benchmarking and evaluation to support opportunity development
  • Build network, enhancing TBIs relationships and influence, through quality service delivery and representation
  • Hire, develop and support a high performing team to account manage and deliver impact
  • Deputising for ED, BD&I as needed: for internal and external projects and audiences

Person Specification

This post would be a fit for a senior leader looking to extend their expertise across a wider portfolio who has these skills and experience:

  • An excellent record of accomplishment as a senior international resource mobilisation executive with extensive experience
  • A successful track record in negotiation and influencing within complex and challenging environments
  • Strong knowledge and senior-level networks across global foundations, governments and governmental agencies and implementation partners
  • A track record of successful lead generation translating into large scale multi-million dollar global programmes
  • Excellent communication skills, the confidence, and personal and professional sophistication, to appeal to partners and donors across a range of sectors internationally
  • Proven ability to oversee numerous projects and initiatives, delegating and performance managing the details.
  • Impact focused, you will have a background of delivering operationally with a positive impact
  • Demonstrated ability in problem analysis and problem resolution at both strategic and functional level
  • Proven experience of providing creative and innovative approaches in developing new initiatives/systems that contribute towards set goals and have delivered significant measurable results
  • With outstanding influencing skills and the proven ability to deliver absent of ‘command and control’ models, in a highly matrixed organisation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A proven self-starter and is entrepreneurial in spirit
